The Other Day on FaceBook, Biodynamic Calendars
My Facebook community is a curious mix of my world, which I guess is normal, except that my world spans both the wine industry and the astrological community. On the surface that would seem ‘worlds’ apart, but consider this, many of the principles that the Biodynamic approach to agriculture, gaining increasing popularity, are based on astrological systems. The Farmer’s Almanac is an astrological calendar to help farmers plan their year. We even know the astrologer. That’s how all Almanacs start out. Visit the Benjamin Franklin museum in Philadelphia and read the first page of his Poor Richard’s Almanac and you’ll see that the cover article is an astrological discussion, albeit a comical one.
So, the other day I’m reading Facebook and someone mentions that they are looking for a particular Biodynamic Calendar. My little astrological antennae started buzzing. You mean there is more than one calendar? This got me thinking; when Rudolf Steiner did his collection of lectures that led to the Biodynamic movement computers had not yet entered the world of astrology, or any other world for that matter. For people who don’t ‘believe’ in astrology all I can say is that they don’t work in the field and their education is remiss. Honestly, the amount of data that is collected in the field is stunning.
J.P Morgan testified at the trial of the astrologer Evangeline Adams (Of the President Adams family) that millionaires didn’t use astrology. Billionaires do. I have to disagree with that, many of our clients over the years have been millionaires. Even though we don’t consult as actively as we have in the past we still write in the field and stay pretty current. In fact, right now we’re authoring our forecasts for 2011.
What really got me going when I saw this line about ‘calendars’ is the idea that most astrologers don’t include the influence of the Fixed Stars. When it comes to wine, I have a feeling that processing the wine during alignments with beneficial Stars could infuse the juice with some serious Ju Ju magic, as they say in the tropics. In the world of flower essences (Think the Bach remedies that are sold at many healing centers that originated at the same time and from the same tradition as Steiner) there are people who bottle formulas by infusing the liquids with stellar energy that come through a telescope. I know this sounds, not to make a pun, ‘out there’, but astrologers world-wide have known about the character of particular Stars, and amazingly, the ancient texts from China agree with those of Greece and Egypt.
I’m not saying that winemakers should put their bottles under telescopes, but I need to get my hands on one of those calendars and see what we can see. Maybe I’ll make some wine this year, as an experiment, hopefully a delicious one.
