Hill Top Perch
Their winery is perched on its own hill, and it sits on a mile of narrow caves. Rombauer is a long time favorite, very well known in restaurants for their Chardonnay. The family developed the winery over many years while the father was an airline pilot and the mother managed another winery.
They are part of the same family as the authors of the book 'The Joy of Cooking'. They sell the book, and if you visit the Culinary Institute of America, only a few minutes away, they have a display showing all of the editions from the first, very small and simple book. Rombauer makes very appealing wines, they have a friendly staff, a great picnic area, wonderful views and aviation memorabilia. In season on the weekends, they employ a valet service to manage the cars because they have limited parking and lots of visitors. They also do wonderful tours.
Wines: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Port, Blend. AWG Rating 89
Navigation Tip: The sign on the Silverado Trail is very small, a simple blue and white sign on the white board fence. But the entrance is wide and at a curve in the road. Going north, they are on the left hand side past Chateau Boswell and across from the mailbox for Failla.
